The exact cause of diabetes is not known but, there are some factors that are known to contribute diabetes. The Type 1 diabetes is an auto immune disease that is caused due to the destruction of the beta cells in the pancreas, which in turn produces less insulin or no insulin.

Type 1 diabetes can also occur with the influence of poor diet or malnutrition or virus infection in the pancreas. Studies have shown that in most cases, diabetes occurs when abnormal amounts of other hormones released in the blood stream which acts as an opponent to the insulin.

Type 2 diabetes is another type of diabetes that occurs when the body tissues does not properly utilize the insulin. Here the beta cells in the pancreas produce sufficient insulin but the body due to some reasons cannot utilize this insulin effectively. This is the most common form of diabetes that occurs in about 90% of the people. Studies have shown that about 80% of the people suffering from type 2 diabetes are overweight.

Diabetes in common can also occur due to other reasons like stress, sex, hereditary and age. Stress, either in physical terms or in emotional terms can also contribute to the initiation of the disease. Other factor is having multiple pregnancies. Studies have strongly indicated that women having multiple pregnancies can develop diabetes.

Hereditary is also another factor that can contribute to diabetes. Researchers have shown that due to some genes which pass from generation to generation may also cause diabetes in their off-springs. Age is also a factor that contributes to occurrence of diabetes. Studies have shown that about 81% of the people affected with diabetes are above 50 years of age.

What are the cures for diabetes mellitus?

For Type 1 diabetes there is no cure so far. As this type of diabetes occurs due to the failure of the beta cells in the pancreas, it has lead to number of schemes to cure this form. This type of diabetes can cured if the patient is given a pancreas or by undergoing kidney-pancreas transplant. It can be also cured with the beta cell transfers but, due to the rare beta cell donors, this is not common in clinics and common hospitals.

The cure for Type 2 diabetes was not discovered until recently. Now a gastric bypass surgery can cure the Type 2 diabetes. This surgery can normalise the blood sugar levels in almost all the obese patients. This helps to change the pattern of the secretion of the gastrointestinal hormone. This surgery is widely performed in the patients with obesity. Studies have shown that the death rate is highly reduced due to the introduction of this surgery.
